First-WarehouseThe seeds of NYS Collection Eyewear were planted over 30 years ago through the friendship of two Brooklyn born and raised young men, Sal Babbino and Marc Behar. Although the bond between the pair formed early, the initial path each took led to very different turns. Following his graduation from college in 1996, Marc Behar pursued his interest in the financial sector, while Sal Babbino invested his energies into a t-shirt and hat cart on the outside courtyard of New York City’s iconic World Trade Center. As Sal Babbino developed his small business, the opportunity arose to purchase the sunglass cart adjacent to him. Realizing he needed a business partner for this venture, Babbino turned to his old friend who, despite his Wall Street position, welcomed the opportunity to join him in the dynamic world of self-employment available in the specialty retail industry.

Once Behar accepted, the development of NYS Collection Eyewear was underway. NYS Collection’s operations humbly began in the basement of Behar’s 1,600 square foot residence. Inventory quickly spread to the living room, the kitchen and all other available space. His small apartment had been transformed into a virtual distribution hub where sorting, boxing and shipping to their increasing number of locations took place.

On the heWTC-locationels of their energetic efforts and passion to succeed, NYS Collection Eyewear grew rapidly from 1996 to 1998 including expansion to six new interior retail locations at the Green Acres, Kings Plaza, Smith Haven, Walt Whitman, Roosevelt Field, and Queens Center Malls. As all available space within Behar’s home had long since disappeared, operations were moved to a 2,500 sq. foot warehouse facility in Mill Basin, Brooklyn in 1999. This location would however last for less than two years as NYS Collection’s business exponentially expanded. Having seized the opportunity to engage in wholesale distribution as opposed to simply retail, a significantly larger facility became a necessity.

As a result, Babbino and Behar moved to an 18,000 square foot warehouse/office facility in 2001 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn which successfully served NYS Collection’s needs for seven years until it too was outgrown. As a result, the pair purchased and completely renovated a 50,000 square foot warehouse distribution facility in Metuchen, New Jersey in March of 2008. In doing so, Sal Babbino and Marc Behar created a new, state-of-the-art corporate headquarters poised to accommodate NYS Collection’s continued growth and expansion in both the domestic and international sunglass industry for years to come.
